After forty years in the Hells Angels, George Christie was ready to retire. As the president of the high-profile Ventura chapter of the club, he had been the yin to Sonny Barger?s yang. Barger was the reckless figurehead and de facto world leader of the Angels. Christie was the negotiator, the spokesman, the thinker, the guy who smoothed things out. He was the one who carried the Olympic torch and counted movie stars, artists, the Grateful Dead and police chief captains among his friends. But leaving isn?t easy, and within two weeks of retirement he was told he was? out bad,? blackballed by his fellow Angels, prohibited from wearing the club patch, even told he should remove his Death?s Head tattoo. Now, Christie?s set out to tell his story. Exile on Front Street is the tale of how a middle-class electrician gave up a comfortable job with the Department of Defense and swore allegiance to the Hells Angels. In this action-packed, hard-hitting memoir, he recounts his life as an outlaw biker with the world?s most infamous motorcycle club.

Huey Piano Smith and the Rocking Pneumonia Blues

Huey Piano Smith and the Rocking Pneumonia Blues

$24.98

Huey “Piano” Smith’s musical legacy stands alongside that of fellow New Orleans legends Dr. John, Fats Domino, Ernie K-Doe, and Allen Toussaint. His 1957 classic, “Rocking Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu,” made Billboard’s top R & B singles chart, and hundreds of artists including Aerosmith, the Grateful Dead, the Beach Boys, Johnny Rivers, and Chubby Checker have recorded his songs. The first biography of the artist responsible for hits “Don’t You Just Know It,” “High Blood Pressure,” and “Sea Cruise,” Huey “Piano” Smith and the Rocking Pneumonia Blues follows the musician’s extraordinary life from his Depression-era childhood to his teen years as a pianist for blues star Guitar Slim to his mainstream success in the 1950s and ’60s. Drawing from extensive interviews and court records, author and journalist John Wirt also provides new insights on Smith’s professional disappointments and financial struggles in the 1980s and ’90s as he battled over royalties from his most successful and profitable work. An enigmatic and guarded personality in a profession of extroverted performers, Smith made farreaching contributions to the New Orleans music scene as a songwriter, pianist, and producer. Wirt reveals that Smith’s numerous collaborations with other artists – including the Clowns, the Pitter Pats, the Hueys, and Shindig Smith and the Soul Shakers – served as vehicles for his creative vision rather than simply as an anonymous backup for a leading front man. Throughout this intimate account, Wirt details Smith’s significant impact on rock and roll history and underscores both the longevity of his music – which has entertained and inspired for over five decades – and the musician’s personal endurance in the face of hardship and opposition.

Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers travel wide, paying their musical debts through song and showing just how confidently the band moves across genres and over time.

The Mindeater [ep] [digipak]

The Mindeater [ep] [digipak]

$5.64

Recording information: Logan Street, Louisville, KY. This collaborative EP between Will Oldham (Bonnie Prince Billy) and experimental acid-folk outfit Phantom Family Halo should please fans of Oldham’s earlier, tinnier work, especially that which was done under the Palace moniker. Raw, lo-fi, and unfussy, Mindeater doesn’t make a very big initial impression, but there’s a grim, rustic eeriness to the whole affair that suggests more than just a shared Kentucky upbringing. Steeped in the kind of vague, messianic Laurel Canyon vibe that permeated some of the creepier Grateful Dead outings, the four tracks – one of which (I Wonder If I Care as Much) is a fuzzed out Everly Brothers cover – sound like someone crept up behind the gang with a tape recorder, waited until the last campfire ember dimmed, and then hit the road, only to be found years later in a ravine with the goods in tow. ~ James Christopher Monger

The Soundtrack of My Life

The Soundtrack of My Life

$4.99

In The Soundtrack of My Life, music legend Clive Davis recounts an extraordinary five-decade career in the music business, while also telling a remarkable personal story of triumphs, disappointments, and encounters with some of the greatest musical artists of our time, including Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, Simon & Garfunkel, Barry Manilow, the Grateful Dead, Patti Smith, Whitney Houston, Carlos Santana, Dionne Warwick, Aretha Franklin, and Alicia Keys. Orphaned in his teens, Davis earned a full scholarship to New York University and another to Harvard Law School. He served as General Counsel of Columbia Records and, in a totally unexpected stroke of fate, became head of the company overnight. More surprisingly, he learned he had? ears,? a rare ability to spot special talent and hit records. Those ears contributed to the success of three companies?Columbia, Arista, and J?where Davis dis?covered and developed more unique artists than anyone in the history of the music industry. What began on the grass at the Monterey Pop Festival with the signing of Janis Joplin has evolved into a lifelong passion and calling, spanning genres, including rock, pop, R & B, country, jazz fusion, and hip-hop. His is the imprimatur that has helped shape contemporary music and, over the years, our popular culture. The Soundtrack of My Life is an essential book for anyone interested in the story of popular music, the fascinating ups and downs of the music business, the alchemy of hits, and the dramatic life of a brilliant leader. and listener. It is a riveting read from beginning to end.
